A showcase of sounds made through bodily movements and gestures. We recorded foley elements in the actual venue while I edited and crafted the sounds into sound events/music/ambience.

No instruments, no physical tools, all improvised stomps/claps/voices/snaps etc etc. Directional speaker configuration ensured immersion of the audience, guiding their sense of direction not only with their eyes but also their ears.

Since it’s a children show, the director wanted the participants to be part of the it by contributing their sounds. So we recorded and edited everything in a span of 30mins for the actual show. Rewarding interactions, boundary pushing directions, great team.

The Observatory continue to push past the formal recording format (stereo), and adapt their work into a multi-directional ambisonics experience for live audience on VR headsets. (This is before the wide acceptance of apple spatial audio for music)

Audiences explored the digital world they built while being immersed in meticulously designed sets. Instead of using multi-speaker arrays, 360º ambisonics/binaural mixing techniques were employed with the help of software like Facebook 360 Spatial Workstation and Reaper.

The band provided stems and we mixed it into a binaural experience for VR headsets.

Full on Nostalgia!

A fun audio walk, but first we had to collect real world sounds from the actual route. There were Hindu temples, schools, hawker centers, old shophouses and the challenge here was to craft a world within the real world. A time before now set in the exact same places. What would you hear? How did they stand against the heavy traffic of modern Singapore?

The Storytellers were recorded in makeshift setups, audio cleaned up and mixed with the sound world crafted by me and music by Namira Rasman.

Scary stories anyone?

Together with Ferry and Calvin, we performed the foley and “music” live for every show with a little help from a few tools I made.

Scrappy, a little wooden contraption with springs/strings/gadgets (from a hardware store) that you could bow/hit/scratch/crank, creating a myraid of spine chilling sounds, and a make shift mannequin head equipped with a binaural microphone.

You could feel the life of these performed sounds, shifting between your ears, engaging your senses, while worked with Kamini the storyteller to push and pull between moments.

SLAP THAT BASS! 3 recorded tracks for the audience own consumption. 1 for the full experience in Victoria Theatre coupled with the bones trembling SUBS.

For the live track, all instruments and voices recorded live in Victoria Theatre. Mixed and presented for a live audience without the actual band and actors.

Garnered a “Light and Sound” nomination for the Straits Times Live Theatre Award 2022.

One of the first shows ever to be presented at the newly acquired venue, The Esplanade Annexe Studio, during the Mosaic Festival 2017.

I designed a 8way speaker configuration and performed with the band Canvas Conversations. Sculpting our album launch into a multifaceted multimedia showcase, we, Canvas Conversations, wrote the album “In Transit”, an ambient electronic pop album, translated onto a 8way speaker configuration along with fantastic visualisations by Aqilah.

Canvas Conversations won the Noise Music Mentorship Award 2015, organised by the National Arts Council. In Transit could have been more, but we were young and there were much to learn. One of the events I’ll always remember.
